It’s About the Land

Lake Gaillard, situated in the east central portion of North Branford and hidden from public view in a stunning wilderness–like setting, is probably one of the best kept secrets of our town. It is the second-largest reservoir of public drinking water in the state. Once or twice a year service clubs co-sponsor public hikes around the reservoir, but the nearly seven mile track is a challenge that many of us with just a few too modest infirmities do not attempt. Here is an opportunity to see the reservoir if your feet and legs won’t take you that far. A bus tour of Lake Gaillard has been arranged for October 29 by the North Branford Land Conservation Trust, Inc. With the Regional Water Authority as cosponsor. RWA is providing a bus operated by its Water Science Center. Seating is very limited. Here are the details.
The bus will pick up passengers at the North Farms Park off route 139in North Branford at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, October 29. The bus tour will include brief presentations by Regional Water Authority staff about the operation and protection of the reservoir as a source of drinking water for thousands of consumers, some is far away as Milford. There will also be a running commentary about the farms and former public roads that occupied the land before the reservoir was developed in the 1920’s. And there will be a surprise stop as part of the tour.

A box lunch will be provided to be enjoyed at either the North Farms Park Pavilion if we had good weather or at the Atwater library if it is a cold and/or rainy day at the conclusion of the tour. The cost of the tour including the box lunch, is $35. You should not delay in filling out the form below and mailing it with your check. We must receive your response by Wednesday, October 23. Your check will be returned if on the day it was received all seats on the bus will have been filled.
